TEKOA TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The principal goals of Tekoa’s Training and Development Program are to enhance the professional development of Tekoa’s treatment team, accent the treatment milieu utilizing a variety of diverse interns, volunteers and AmeriCorps members, and provide community education/training regarding Tekoa’s mission and adolescent issues.


Primary Objectives for Staff Development

Tekoa’s foundational framework views our staff members as “agents of change” and therefore our most valuable resources. Tekoa’s commitment to the investment of our staff is through training and development.
• Recruit, develop and retain of quality staff
• Build camaraderie among staff members through team building activities
• Provide staff members with multiple resources to enhance individual skill development and broaden knowledge base
• Assist staff in developing as individuals and highly professional team members
• Provide staff with the opportunities to contribute to intentional, therapeutic goals of individual clients
• Promote and utilize existing diversity among staff population
• Deliver ongoing trainings to counselors to further prepare them for working with the challenges of the at-risk population
• Teach, through practice, Tekoa’s philosophy regarding the value of relationships through staff investment, recognition and appreciation

Utilization of Academic Interns


Tekoa provides:
• An environment that offers opportunities for learning and experiencing the need, importance, value and contribution of working with at risk youth and their families
• An environment with countless teaching moments for future colleagues to assess, plan, deliver, and reflect upon intentional interventions with the assistance and supervision of highly trained, quality professional counselors and therapists
• Opportunities for Tekoa to lend organizational philosophy and treatment approach to future colleagues who in turn will carry forth, utilize and disperse to other professionals in the field

AmeriCorps Service: Project R.I.S.E. (Respect, Involvement, Skills, Education)

AmeriCorps is a network of nationwide service programs that engage more than 50,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical social needs in their communities. Tekoa, Inc., in partnership with the VA Commission for National and Community Service, began sponsoring an AmeriCorps program in the fall of 2004. AmeriCorps members are energetic, committed individuals who provide 1700 hours of literacy tutoring, conflict resolution skills and service learning opportunities for Tekoa’s clients in our five residential and educational facilities. Member benefits include a living allowance, health insurance, an education award and extensive job skills and community development training.

Opportunities for Volunteers

Tekoa strives to support the endeavors of volunteers through quality supervision and training. We seek dedicated individuals who are responsible, nurturing and sincere. While our at-risk youth can greatly benefit from the interactions and experiences shared with volunteers, we insist that volunteers are professionally eager and personally open to fully accepting the opportunities and challenges available at Tekoa. Community Education and Training

Tekoa is committed to serving as a resource for communities. With a staff of nearly 70 employees we have the ability to provide an array of services to outside organizations. Possibilities for your organization include: guest speaking, corporate team building activities, and adolescent awareness issues. We will work with parties to develop and deliver training activities that are specific to your agency needs. Staff Certifications:

Angie Roberts-Dobbins
Angie is the Director of Training and Development with Tekoa, Inc. Angie has 10 years of experience with Tekoa and was a founding counselor in 1994. Before assuming the role of Director of Training and Development, Angie was the Program Director for the Tekoa Boys residential facility. Angie earned a Master of Science in Counseling and Human Development from Radford University.
